On the way from Rua da Alfândega to Rua da Felicidade, we would catch the tasty smell of vertical barbecue from a Turkish döner kebab eatery. Local Macau people shouldn’t feel strange with this Turkish eatery especially for those office workers who need a quick lunch at Nam Van area.
“The owner Jafar sent us smiley greetings when we passed by every time.” Most of the neighbours told us the same when we mentioned this döner kebab eatery. “Jafar is sporty; he carries a bright smile all the time.” Some changes in recent decade in Rua da Alfândega and Rua da Felicidade area. Many old neighbours were living in this old streets in past time and now it became a street with many Filipinos eateries, plus with Jafar’s döner kebab eatery, some Portuguese restaurant and Cantonese cuisine, here is a multicultural street nowadays. Since Jafar had run döner eatery here for many years, he is so familiar with the locals in this area.
Jafar is owner and chef of this Turkish vertical barbecue eatery; his father came to Macau working and living many years ago, Jafar decided to come here be with him 12 years ago. Then started with the first barbecue eatery in Rua do Campo, since the Turkish barbecue is a rare cuisine in Macau, the business was running quite well. Afterwards, due to the rental increasing, the first eatery in Rua do Campo was closed. The second one started in Rua da Alfândega, facing the same rental issue, they moved to the present location as the third one in Rua da Felicidade 6 years ago.
During 12 years living in Macau, Jafar had accomplished some degrees in Psychology in two local universities. Moreover, he gained the degree in sport-related subject in Beijing. Besides studying, he is running a Persian carpet shop and managing clothes trading business in China. He’s originally from Iran, asked him about homesick since leaving his hometown 12 years, Jafar told us he goes back home at least once per year, from the beginning in Macau was not so much miss home but now he does. Sometimes he brought some sports groups to Iran for exchange activities when he returned home. Even though both cultures in big difference, Jafar thought Macau is a suitable city for living.
In the early times he was in Macau, often got rejected when he asked for direction, he thought because he is a foreigner and caused by language issue mostly. After some years belonged to here, more understanding about Macau, he would assist the tourists when they seek help on this street.
During the period of the second and third döner kebab eatery in Rua da Felicidade area almost 10 years, Jafar could see the rise and fall of social change in this lively street. “Tourist numbers keep decreasing recent years, typhoon Hato causing a large drop for business, this street was bustling with noise at some time in the past.” Said Jafar. Among the districts in Macau, this area is his most favourite one. New and old architectures co-existed and small community atmosphere. He is deciding to open up more possibilities in this area.
